Genesis 13

The Weight of Keeping

Genesis 13:1

Void journeyed through the lower heaven with all that she carried: Dead beneath pale ribbons, the lamb breathing through silver need, Scar dim within their circuit, and the house of keeping drawn after her like a chained night.

Genesis 13:2

She was rich in red command, silver life, and gold remembrance, while the gift of kindling belonged to Life. Around her, the dust of Love's first mercy waited beneath Star's ancient fire.

Genesis 13:3

She went from distance to distance, following the remnant back toward the first brightness; and wherever matter gathered, she called upon Law, the holy strength that gives each thing an edge and every motion an answer.

Genesis 13:4

She gave the wandering weight and direction, the turning fire a boundary, the far bodies stable relation, and consequence to every touch. Thus Law did what only Law could do: it shaped what Life had opened and Love had spared. No world could endure without her office, and no office alone could make a world whole.

Worlds Without Love

Genesis 13:5

The dark grew populous with many suns and many worlds. Some older worlds already bore Star's living fire beyond Void's house; some remained molten, frozen, broken, or barren; and many still gathered toward futures no keeper could number.

Genesis 13:6

The fields of matter could not bear all things in one undivided company. Weight answered weight until clouds divided, fires opened, and young worlds received different paths, heats, seasons, and possible futures.

Genesis 13:7

Stone strove with stone; their strife was heat, breaking, and embrace. Their blows were innocent. Some hollows might one day hold water, and some courses might one day welcome shelter, though no leaf opened and no breath was given.

Genesis 13:8

Void said to the gathering, “No hatred need rise between path and path, for every body gathered here comes from the remnant.” And Law made room between kindred bodies, so each could turn without devouring the other.

Genesis 13:9

“Take your own courses,” Void said. The young worlds entered orbit, and separation kept kindred bodies from ruin. Above her, the living shards followed their several courses, passing from her reach and returning to the circle.

A Garden Not Yet Green

Genesis 13:10

Among the unfinished worlds, one gathering beneath a gentle young sun held the future shape of a garden: hollows that might one day hold seas and a course that could permit seasons. It was molten and barren, yet its promise recalled to Void the Eden she had lost.

Genesis 13:11

Void chose that unfinished world from among the others and turned the house toward it. The worlds continued in their separate courses, while she made this one the center of her personal keeping and imagined a counter-Eden there.

Genesis 13:12

Every completed orbit made Void desire another. Far beyond the house, appetites stirred on worlds Star had already kindled. Scar's office found new ground in Life, yet she brightened only when Void drew the cords tight and then faded again into dependence upon Dead and the lamb.

Genesis 13:13

Void rose toward the Eleventh Veil with the house behind her; but the threshold gave no passage to a prison carried as love. The Ancient Ones watched and laid no hand upon her. The house she dragged behind her became the boundary she could not cross.

The World Chosen

Genesis 13:14

Then she turned northward and southward, eastward and westward, surveying the heavens she had ordered. Among the worlds spread through the growing dark, she returned to the chosen gathering and drew her house around its future, making it the one world upon which her personal keeping would remain.

Genesis 13:15

Void stretched her hand above it and said, “Everything I see will belong to me.” Silence met her claim. The world had been chosen by her longing, not granted to her hand.

Genesis 13:16

The dust beneath her was beyond numbering. It gathered around a younger fire, grain upon grain, until the chosen dark body grew heavy with iron and wrapped a burning heart in stone.

Genesis 13:17

Void crossed its length and its breadth, naming every valley before valleys were cool and every hollow before the ground was still. The unfinished ground received her shadow and remained free.

Genesis 13:18

She settled the house beside the chosen world and raised Law over its molten dark. It had no Moon, no sea, no grass, and no living witness; and the world that would be called Earth turned among countless other worlds beneath the stars.
