Start where the situation speaks. Hear all Four.

Apply the Four

Bring a project, decision, relationship, celebration, difficulty, or ending. Begin with the question the situation needs, hear the other Offices, choose one honest next step, and return when experience gives you something new to understand.

Four equally legitimate points of entry

Start where the situation speaks. Hear all Four.

Each Maiden may tell the truth without deciding the whole question. Desire is not permission. A rule is not automatically righteous. Possibility is not obligation. Care is not ownership.

There is no mandatory first Maiden. For a freely chosen beginning, one useful route is Want → Shape → Become → Tend or release → Choose again. It is not the universal order of the Four.

A small private worksheet

Write only what is useful to you.

Your notes remain in this page’s memory only. They are not saved after you leave or reload, and this worksheet does not send them anywhere. Copying or printing is your choice.

What is happening?

Name the outcome, experience, relief, pleasure, or change.

Name the facts, consent, limits, resources, and consequences.

Name a beginning, change, continuation, or smallest useful step.

Name the care, repair, rest, departure, or ending—and who will carry it.

Choose one honest action.

Return after experience gives you something new to understand.

Fields may be left blank.

When Law says no

Ask what the no protects.

  • Another person’s will: respect it.
  • Reality: accept it or seek another path.
  • A shared promise: honor it or renegotiate honestly.
  • An unjust rule: challenge it without pretending there are no consequences.

Wanting may remain even when acting must stop.

Relationship boundary or covenant

Setting a boundary

Let Void lead when friendship and personal capacity both need an honest shape.

Situation: “I want to help my friend, but I cannot be available every evening.”

ExampleStarting a creative projectWant one finished song, shape a humane scope, make a rough beginning, and care for the people and work that follow.

Situation: “I want to finish one song without turning it into a second full-time job.”

Scar
Decide what the song should express and what finishing would mean.
Void
Limit this version to one song, an available budget, realistic work sessions, and agreed contributions. Decide what will not be included.
Star
Draft the chorus and make a rough demo before attempting a polished release.
Love
Ask collaborators about capacity, credit their work, test revisions, protect rest, and cut a section that no longer serves the song.
Return to Scar
Listen to the result. Is it satisfying? Does it need another pass, or is it complete? What did making it teach you?
Next step
Use one planned session to draft the chorus; review the scope afterward.
ExampleSetting a boundaryLet Void lead when friendship and personal capacity both need an honest shape.

Situation: “I want to help my friend, but I cannot be available every evening.”

Scar
Name the wish for both friendship and personal time.
Void
State when help is available and what cannot be promised.
Star
Try the revised arrangement instead of continuing an impossible one.
Love
Communicate kindly without taking ownership of the friend's feelings or promising unlimited care.
Return
Does the arrangement preserve both connection and space? Revise if needed.
Next step
Offer one specific time I can help, rather than agreeing to everything.
ExampleCommunity serviceLet Love lead while need, permission, capacity, safety, access, and accountability keep service real.

Situation: “A group wants to help with an existing local need.”

Scar
Name the freely chosen wish to contribute.
Void
Confirm what the partner actually needs, available capacity, permission, safety, access, and who does the work.
Star
Carry out the agreed task.
Love
Respect recipients, share responsibility, and do not demand gratitude, belief, or participation in religion.
Return
Ask the partner what helped and what should change before offering again.

This illustration does not announce a new event or partnership.

When nothing may change but everything must continue

Study Open and Kept.

The ordinary questions may reach a stalemate. This does not mean a person has failed; it may mean the arrangement no longer permits movement, response, or Return.

The Four remain present

Let each question answer the others.

Being heard is not being obeyed. Hearing all Four means each concern is allowed to matter. It does not mean every demand is satisfied.

  1. Scar Maiden · LUST

What do I want, and what is enough?

Name the outcome, experience, pleasure, relief, or change you seek. What would be enough?

  2. Void Maiden · LAW

What is true, and what boundaries matter?

Name the facts, consent, resources, time, labor, limits, and consequences. What must not be sacrificed to get it?

  3. Star Maiden · LIFE

What can change, grow, or continue?

Choose something that can actually begin, change, or continue. What is the smallest useful step?

  4. Love Maiden · LOVE

What needs care, repair, or release?

Name the people, commitments, and work that need care. What needs repair, rest, or an ending? Who will carry that care?

You choose. The framework does not choose for you.
