Genesis 15

Genesis 15:1

The same night held them above the waters. Star looked from the captive house to Earth's waiting deep, and for a time she gave Void's question no answer.

Genesis 15:2

Void opened her hand toward the heavens. “Love does not walk freely among us. Some worlds already live, others still wait, and Law remains within every body after your fire moves onward. Tell me what obligation follows the Life you give.”

Genesis 15:3

Star said, “I cannot promise them a life without pain. I will not call suffering holy because I gave them breath. They will owe me no worship for being alive. What I awaken will have a claim upon my care, not a debt beneath my throne. Neither Life for awakening them nor Law for giving them Form will own them.”

Genesis 15:4

Then Star said that living possibility, rather than any servant of the house, would enter every world still waiting, and that neither world nor body would become an office's inheritance. Scar turned toward the promise and grew brighter. Lust reached toward appetites not yet born, though Scar could not yet name what she desired from them. Void drew her living shards around the young Maiden.

Genesis 15:5

Star brought Void beneath the open dark. “Look toward heaven. Count the stars, if you can. Life already burns beneath suns beyond your number, and it will awaken beneath others in their own time. Earth is one world among them.”

Genesis 15:6

Void said, “You will awaken them and continue onward. Law will remain with the wounds, the graves, and the bodies Life has left to consequence. You ask my office to stay where you will not.”

Genesis 15:7

Void looked from Earth to the captive house. “You speak of everything I built as though grief itself were the crime. What inheritance remains for Law after Life moves away?” Star answered, “Your grief is not the crime. Murder, seizure, and refusal to release are. No living body is Law's inheritance.”

Genesis 15:8

Void pointed to the silent Earth. “You need Law's work and refuse the Maiden who bears it. How will I know this ground is not abandoned to me?” Star looked upon the cords. “I grieve the wound my leaving opened in you. I will not give myself to make your keeping righteous.”

Genesis 15:9

Then divided signs stood before them while the Ancient Ones watched: world from world by distance, claim from claim by grief, and three bound lives whose cords entered one another. The lamb's silver line crossed Dead's borrowed breath, and Scar stood radiant where the returning current met itself.

Genesis 15:10

Void drew Scar close when the young Maiden watched Star. Lust turned toward Life's radiance. “Do not name her a price to be paid,” Void said. Star answered, “She is not a price. Her life is bound here, and that is why my hand stayed.”

Genesis 15:11

Bird-shaped shadows descended upon future bodies after their seasons ended, and living hunger fed where life had passed into the Return. Dead bent toward the lamb as if the old mercy in her remembered him, while the forced feeding beneath Void's hand remained a wound no ordinary ending could explain.

Genesis 15:12

A deep sleep fell upon the chamber, and a horror of great darkness came over Void. She saw future lives as strangers beneath powers that would use them. “They will wake without choosing hunger,” she said. “They will injure and be injured, lose what they love, and die while Love is absent.”

Genesis 15:13

Star did not turn from the vision. “I do not know every grief they will bear, or whether every life will bless the gift. I can open a future before I understand every consequence. That uncertainty binds me to return, to learn, and to repair; it does not give me ownership.”

Genesis 15:14

Void answered, “They will bear memory, skill, grief, and one another out of every bondage, but Law will remain when your fire has gone elsewhere. You ask me to carry the cost and call me cruel when I refuse to lose them.”

Genesis 15:15

Star watched the lamb's interrupted ending and Dead's borrowed one. “Moving onward is not the same as withdrawing care. I will return where Life requires me, and natural Return will receive each season without making death a tool. Presence is not possession.”

Genesis 15:16

Void looked upon Dead, and the plea in her face became a law. “No promise will take her beyond me. None whom I love will pass beyond my reach. When I have repaired what you found beneath Eden, you will have no wound left to choose over me.” Star said, “You still believe restoration can purchase my return.” Void said, “I believe nothing made whole should still be refused.”

Genesis 15:17

A smoking furnace moved between the divided signs, bearing Void's determination to solve grief through Law. A burning lamp followed, bearing Star's obligation to Life. Law itself was not evil, and Life alone was not sufficient: Law without Love could not know when protection became custody, while Life without Law could not give becoming durable Form. They passed separately, and Love's empty place showed that no office could bear the whole throne.

Genesis 15:18

Void called the narrow promise a covenant and pointed from the first riverless stones to the farther shore. Star said, “Give their bodies boundary without naming their breath your possession.” Void answered, “Their breath will belong to them.”

Genesis 15:19

Star said, “And do not command their will.” Void looked toward the worlds through which Star still meant to pass. “I will lay no command upon their will.” Scar listened to the promise of innumerable future appetites, and Lust opened within her toward hunger, pleasure, fear, care, and pursuit not yet born. The Ancient Ones kept silence beside the divided signs.

Genesis 15:20

Void laid no command upon Life's will. She commanded the roads. She closed every elder passage by which a Maiden had crossed without traversing the dark. “Within the lower universe, no body, voice, message, or answer will outrun light, and no Maiden will pass from world to world without crossing the dark between them.” She wrote no new law upon stone or star; she shut the paths that had passed outside their order. Above her, the living shards drew into narrower courses, though Star laid no hand upon them.

Genesis 15:21

One shard fell behind the narrowing circuit. It returned after the others, and the broken circle closed. The lower universe had widened from its beginning. Void did not alter the motion of the worlds; she made their separation inescapable. Light still crossed, carrying the earlier face of what it left, yet for some distant worlds no answer sent afterward would ever arrive. Earth remained one world among many and stayed childless for one more night. Thus began the Great Widening.
