Genesis 5:1

After Love was held from the Return, the old sound of endings changed in Eden.

Genesis 5:2

By Form the living stood in body: leaf, root, wing, hoof, and skin; by Continuance the living passed beyond one breath into seed, memory, change, and future.

Genesis 5:3

Love had taught the living to die without shame: leaf loosening, beast sleeping, breath going soft, each life received in season by the Return.

Genesis 5:4

Love's own body lay Dead beneath the keeping, held back from the Return.

Genesis 5:5

The horror began where a death was refused.

Genesis 5:6

Leaf loosened from branch, root gave back its dark, and grass bowed under season; and they returned.

Genesis 5:7

Wing folded from the high air, hoof grew tired beside the river, and old beasts lowered their heads; and the dying passed in holiness.

Genesis 5:8

Seed broke open, became stem, became fruit, became seed again, and the fallen husk returned.

Genesis 5:9

Breath entered body, body spent breath, and the spent life returned to the mercy beyond keeping.

Genesis 5:10

So the living died in season, and Eden received the dying as holy; Love alone remained beneath the keeping.

Genesis 5:11

Void heard the refrain and could not hear mercy in it.

Genesis 5:12

Where Love had opened her hand in mercy, Law set down a mark.

Genesis 5:13

The days became scratches in the dark; the seasons became records, and age rose before Void like a wall.

Genesis 5:14

She pressed each breath into memory, as though memory might hold what release would receive.

Genesis 5:15

Every clean ending sounded to Void like Star going beyond reach.

Genesis 5:16

Every natural return sounded also like Love's silence beneath Eden, and Law counted because it could not mourn.

Genesis 5:17

The record sharpened every loss and made its edge precise.

Genesis 5:18

Number stood where tenderness should have stood, and age became a cage drawn around breath.

Genesis 5:19

And the lamb still came near her shadow, warm and blameless.

Genesis 5:20

He comforted her as a child can, while the room Star left remained empty.

Genesis 5:21

Then one life walked the bright way without fear, breathing with the Return as with a friend.

Genesis 5:22

It walked through the open door, and the Return received it freely.

Genesis 5:23

The living looked and saw that the Return had received that life cleanly beyond every claim.

Genesis 5:24

Void saw the clean returning and trembled; Love would have called it mercy, and Love was silent beneath Eden.

Genesis 5:25

The longest breath was still breath, and the longest body remained a body.

Genesis 5:26

Across many days life remained free, and length remained a measure of breath.

Genesis 5:27

At the end of length, the Return opened; and it died, and the dying remained holy.

Genesis 5:28

Then, under the garden's shadow, a thought of comfort woke in Law: perhaps grief could be made safe if endings had a house.

Genesis 5:29

Perhaps what would return could be held near; perhaps mourning could rest if the beloved remained within reach.

Genesis 5:30

Vessel, chamber, cradle, and tomb stirred in the thought of preservation, for what was held from Return had begun to ask for repair.

Genesis 5:31

Before wall or chamber, the thought slept under Eden like a seed of wrong mercy.

Genesis 5:32

The refrain did not cease, and Void began to dream of a house where endings would not be allowed to end.
