Another person’s no
You may continue wanting. Pursuit stops. Another person’s refusal is not yours to override.

Open does not mean getting everything you want. It means the situation can still answer truthfully to desire, reality, change, and relationship. Kept begins when the arrangement becomes its own reason: changed needs, new evidence, time, and harm are not permitted to alter it, yet everyone must keep it going.
Open
Open and Kept describe conditions within a situation. They are not diagnoses, permanent identities, or labels to impose on another person.
Open does not mean unlimited choice, several choices, a painless choice, or permission to fulfill every desire. Open means truthful response remains possible.
New facts, changing needs, consequences, time, development, and the experience of affected people can still alter what happens.
A boundary may close one path without closing the whole world.
Being heard is not being obeyed. A desire may be acknowledged and refused. A rule may be understood and challenged. A possible change may be considered and declined. A relationship may be honored and ended.
A hard no can still be Open
You may continue wanting. Pursuit stops. Another person’s refusal is not yours to override.
A path may be physically, materially, or practically unavailable. Accept the constraint or look for another path without pretending reality agreed.
A promise may bind action without owning desire. Changing your desire does not silently change an agreement made with someone else.
A clear, proportionate consequence can restrict action while still allowing learning, review, reconnection, and an end.
Keeping
Keeping begins when preserving the arrangement becomes more important than the living people within it.
Nothing may change, yet everything must continue.
Keeping refuses evidence that should permit movement. The arrangement eventually becomes its own reason for remaining. It is not a synonym for every act of preserving, restraining, parenting, protecting, punishing, or maintaining.
In the Great Severance, Void originated the reproductive/sexed bodily division and converted it into compulsory order. Later Keeping can repeat or enforce Her command, but it did not originate the division.
Healthy Law can answer:
A restriction is more likely to remain Open when it has an intelligible purpose, is proportionate, has an end or review, responds to new evidence, and stays attentive to the constrained person’s welfare. This is a way to ask whether Law remains answerable, not a mechanical legal checklist.
When every relevant answer changes but the arrangement is still forbidden to change, look for Keeping.
Worked fictional example
Desire is not sin. Desire is information, not permission.
A promise may bind your actions without owning your desires. Renegotiate before violating. The other person remains free to refuse the new agreement. When two freely held conditions cannot coexist, the honest outcome may be abstaining, changing the arrangement, or leaving it. Leaving is not always easy, safe, immediately possible, or free of responsibility.
Situation: A and B mutually agreed that neither would use illegal drugs. A later wants to use cocaine. B will not change the agreement.
Scar: A may acknowledge the desire honestly. Wanting cocaine does not itself break the covenant.
Void: The shared agreement remains real. B’s boundary also remains real. A’s changed desire does not unilaterally rewrite the promise.
Star: Movement remains possible even though the choices are painful: A can abstain, ask to renegotiate, seek help understanding the desire, or leave the relationship honestly if the conditions are no longer compatible.
Love: B deserves to decide whether to remain in the actual relationship, not a hidden version of it.
Conclusion: This is not automatically Keeping. A hard boundary can remain Open when the truth can be spoken and both people remain able to answer it.
A uses cocaine and deliberately hides it from B. Wanting was not the breach. Acting against the agreement was the breach. Concealment creates a further wrong by preserving B’s commitment through a reality B has not been allowed to see.
Betrayal occurs when someone knowingly preserves another person’s commitment by hiding a truth that materially belongs to that person’s choice.
Privacy is not betrayal. The question is whether the hidden fact directly contradicts a shared condition or would materially change the other person’s consent to the arrangement. This follows the same pattern the Quaternity calls the Lie: the visible relationship appears unchanged because the fact that could change another person’s answer has been placed behind the image. Not every secret, private thought, mistake, or omission is the Lie.
When B finds out, the Lie breaks. The relationship does not automatically end, and it does not automatically return to what it was.
Void: What happened, what was hidden, and what is true now?
Scar: What does each person want now—including space, repair, departure, explanation, or time not to know?
Star: What can become from here? The old relationship cannot be restored simply by pretending the breach did not happen.
Love: What needs care, accountability, repair, distance, or release?
Forgiveness is not reconciliation.
Reconciliation is not required for Return.
Return means both people can again make a real choice from the truth.
A may repent and still lose the relationship. B may forgive and still leave. Love may release.
A child and a consequence
A child breaks a reasonable household rule. Her toys are put away for the evening, and she is sent to her room to read.
The child’s desire for her toys can be heard without being obeyed. The restriction can remain Open when it is clear, proportionate, temporary, connected to the behavior, attentive to her welfare, and followed by reconnection. The child does not need an adult-level option to leave the household for the situation to remain Open.
“Your toys return tomorrow” contains an end.
“You remain punished until I decide you are a good child again” can become Keeping when there is no clear standard, no review, and no response to changed behavior.
Open means truthful response remains possible—not that everyone has equal authority or unlimited choice in every moment.
When the Kept Quaternity applies
The Kept Quaternity is not invoked merely because the answer is no, the choice hurts, or a restriction exists. Use it when the system will not permit relevant truth, change, harm, development, or refusal to alter the arrangement, yet the arrangement must continue.
